Mastodon is the new Twitter, at least for now, anyway.
As Elon Musk continues to make waves in the Twitterverse, hundreds of users have left the app and flocked to Mastodon, an alternative, open-source social media app.
Mastodon exists on what’s called a “federated” network. That means the app is open, with anyone able to access and use and change the code to their liking. It’s run on servers across the world that use the common Mastodon technology, known as the “Fediverse.”
Hanging out on Mastodon seems pretty cool. From what we know so far, you don’t have to pay to get verified and your posts (called “toots”) can be longer than your tweets. One drawback is the fact that you’re going to have a hard time building your following back up, because the search function and online names are different from Twitter.
It’ll be interesting to see if this open-source app takes off or if the fires eventually get put out at Twitter and people go back to that app.
