The Boston Red Sox have hired the first black woman to coach a team affiliated with Major League Baseball.

Her name is Bianca Smith, and she’ll coach some of the organization’s minor leaguers.  She won’t be on a team’s staff . . . yet.  She’ll just serve as a general instructor for minor leaguers at the team’s complex in Florida.

She played softball for Dartmouth College . . . and has worked and coached for several college programs in recent years.  She has also interned with the Texas Rangers and the Cincinnati Reds.
